Half a century ago, the passage of Title IX marked a mandate to change education across the county, forcing schools to choose how to respond. Institutions took different paths navigating the changed landscape in K-12 and higher education, including in athletics and sports. Trinity University’s story, from its origins in 1869 to 1972 and the ensuing decades, is told through the new book From the Sidelines to the Headlines: The Legacy of Women’s Sports at Trinity University, by Betsy Gerhardt Pasley, a 1977 graduate and former Trinity athlete. While every institution’s story is unique, Trinity's story provides a lens to view the challenges and progress of athletics and education through local, state, and national contexts, as well as from individual and systemic perspectives.

Join Trinity University Press, the Trinity’s Sport Management Program, and the Trinity University Department of Education for a panel of San Antonio sportswomen discussing women's trials and triumphs in sports and the paths yet to be cleared, including how educational opportunities have evolved in the last fifty years. The panel includes Betsy Gerhardt Pasley; Jenny Carnes, President and CEO for San Antonio Sports and former all-American basketball player for the University of the Incarnate Word Yanika Daniels, member of Trinity’s first national qualifying women’s basketball team in 1995; and Mary Ullmann Japhet, former executive with San Antonio Sports and a current board member of the nonprofit.

This discussion should appeal to anyone interested in history, higher education, sports, women’s rights, and social change. Current and former athletes, supporters of K-12 and intercollegiate sports in the San Antonio community, and those interested in equity and inclusion are especially encouraged to attend.

The discussion will begin at 3:00 p.m., will be followed by a social hour and book signing with the author in the Dicke-Smith Building Foyer.
