Borderlands Cinema: Past, Present, and Possible
Borderlands Cinema: Past, Present, and Possible brings filmmakers Cristina Ibarra and Alex Rivera into conversation about two complementary approaches to storytelling from the U.S.–Mexico borderlands. Drawing from their current projects, Ibarra explores intimate narratives of family, memory, and place rooted in El Paso, while Rivera examines histories of power, technology, and migration shaping the borderlands across time. Together, their work reflects the region not only as a site of lived experience, but also as a lens for understanding larger political and technological transformations. The talk explores how cinema can illuminate the past, interpret the present, and imagine new possibilities for the borderlands.
